Resume

Bruno Lima (b. 1996 in Maceió) is a cellist and composer from Brazil. He had his first solfège lessons at the age of four with his father, but he first came into contact with the cello only at the age of 16 when he was at high school. Before that, he played the alto saxophone at the church from his hometown and immersed himself in the world of Brazilian popular music and jazz, having good familiarity with improvisation and jazz harmony. Some years later he began to write arrangements for fun, which developed great interest into orchestration, traditional harmony and counterpoint.

Since then, Bruno has been an active artist in Brazil and Europe playing chamber music and writing new pieces. He has been praised for his tone quality, inspired artistry and flexibility to play both classical and popular music on the cello. His arrangements and compositions have also been played all over the world, like at the Lucerne Festival in Switzerland, Järna Festival Academy in Sweden, Ilumina Festival in Brazil, Fränkischer Sommer in Germany, the CelloFest in Finland among others.

As a cellist and active chamber musician, Lima has collaborated with several musicians such as Tai Murray, Julian Steckel, Yura Lee, Jennifer Stumm, Liza Ferschtman, Anthony Marwood, Christian Poltéra, Lars Anders Tomter among others. He's currently the cellist and founder member of Ruska String Quartet and has a duo with Finnish guitarist Otto Kentala. In 2018, Lima won two First Prizes in national competitions: Young Soloist Competition by UFRN and 6th Youth Talent Competition - Mansueto Barbosa Trophy.

After graduating in cello performance from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (Natal/BRA) with Professor Fabio Presgrave, Bruno got a place at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland, and is now finishing his master’s degree in cello performance and composition at the Sibelius Academy, with Erkki Lahesmaa and Tapio Tuomela respectively. He currently plays a French cello by Georges Cunault from 1912 granted by the Sibelius Academy. Bruno was recently awarded a merit scholarship by the Martin Wegelius Foundation.
