Tom Jobim was in the habit of writing letters. Correspondence was frequently exchanged with friends Vinicius de Moraes and Chico Buarque, and this habit became music.

Vinicius de Moraes wrote the song “Carta ao Tom 74” which was set to music by Toquinho. Vinicius speaks in a nostalgic tone about the address of the house where Tom lived for a while in Ipanema, and where he composed several songs alongside his friend, among them the songs of the play “Orfeu da Conceição”.

Missing Tom, Vinicius said he wrote the letter, but never delivered it: “I told Toquinho that it was about time to write a second letter to him, remembering the good times of Bossa Nova and it's called 'Carta ao Tom 74 '.” In response, Tom Jobim created “Carta do Tom”, a parody in partnership with Toquinho and Chico Buarque, in 1977, which talks about the changes in the Ipanema neighborhood, which, according to him, became more dangerous, and in the architecture of the city, which covered up your view of Christ the Redeemer.
